Hello and welcome to the Hoop Heads Podcast. It’s Mike Klinzing here with my co-host Jason Sunkle. And we are pleased to welcome in for, I don’t even know how many times if we count the round tables, Joe, but we’re pleased to welcome in Joe’s decision from Unleashed Potential in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Joe and I have got an exciting camp coming up this summer that we are putting together and we think it’s going to be outstanding for boys that are rising to grades six through nine.

So Joe, welcome to the Hoop Heads Pod.

[00:02:39] Joe Stasyszyn: Hey, thanks Mike and Jason. It’s always great to be with you guys again and I, I’m so. About what we have coming up here. You know, I want to start just by saying this. I’ve been in the basketball world for a long time. Been very fortunate to do a lot of cool things and, and you know, I really don’t do many camps anymore other than what we do.

We do some some things like we’re going to be talking about today. But yeah, basically my work with USA Basketball court coach for their goal camps and Also working with Coach K and Duke for many, many years, and you know that then that that’ll continue. But yeah, I, I’m, I’m, I’m in a, in some international camps, especially over in Italy, the jam camp.

So I’m really I guess you could say I’m sort of picky about what I, what I want to do with camps and then you offer me this opportunity and, and, and, and you guys are so great. I just thought this would be a great, great thing for us to. Yeah,

[00:03:29] Mike Klinzing: we’re super excited. I think just to kind of give people the background on what this training camp Elite skill development and performance combine is going to be all about.

I’ve had the good fortune of being able to work with the basketball coaching staff at Western Reserve Academy here in Cleveland, Ohio. And Matt Garvey has been instrumental in helping me to get my day camps out at Western Reserve. And so we’ve been working with the day camps for four or five years out there, and Matt approached me with the idea of, Hey, would you be interested in running an overnight camp?

And it was really intriguing to me. It’s something that I’ve kind of always had in the back of my mind that, hey, it would be great to be able to. To bring an overnight camp here to Cleveland. And so when Matt approached me with that, I started looking through and obviously with the podcast, there’s a ton of guests that we’ve had on that have a tremendous amount of basketball experiences.

And I kept going through the list and, and as I kept coming back to the name Joe’s decision and I know what Joe does. I know what he’s done in the past. I know what he’s doing with Unleashed Potential. And anybody who’s worked with him in any capacity understands the basketball knowledge. He brings to the table.

And so I was super excited about giving him a call and saying, Hey Joe, do you want to work with us? And obviously he said yes and couldn’t be more excited about that. So just to give you an idea of what it is that we’re actually putting together. So the name of the campus Training Camp Elite, skill Development and Performance Combine, it’s going to be held at Western Reserve Academy, which is in Hudson, Ohio, which is a suburb of Cleveland.

It’s going to be for boys that are rising. The grades six through nine. In the year 2023, so that’s fall of 2023 and the camp will take place at Western Reserve June 29th through July 1st, 2023. So it’ll be two nights, three days. We are looking at bringing in some outstanding high school coaches from the Cleveland area and from all across the country to staff the camp.

So you’re never going to find a better teaching environment than what you’re going. At this camp and Western Reserve Academy is just a place that when you come here and you get on the campus, it’s unbelievably beautiful. The facilities for a camp like this are terrific, fantastic. Couldn’t be any better. We have five full courts in three different gyms that are all within the same building, and then the dorm and.

Dining hall are in the same building, which is about a hundred yards away from the building that houses the gym. So it couldn’t be a better situation in terms of maximizing the amount of time that players are going to get on court. The amount of time that they’re going to be able to spend with the coaching staff.

Everything is convenient, everything is right there, and we are just super excited about what we’re going to be able to bring to the table. So from a basketball standpoint, the idea here is to bring in players that want to improve, want to get better, and are looking for a way to improve their skills within an environment where we’re also going to emphasize as we go through this, how you fit into your team.

And I’m going to let Joe talk about the. Different skill development sessions that are going to be part of the camp that we think are going to be just fantastic for anybody who’s out there that comes to the camp. If you have, again, a boy who’s in that middle school age or just about ready to go into high school, we think this is going to be just a tremendous way for them to prepare.

And continue to improve their game. So, Joe, talk a little bit about some of the basketball side of this.

[00:07:01] Joe Stasyszyn: Yes, yes. Thanks Mike. And, and let me start by saying this you know, I, I can assure you coaches and players who may be listening this, this is a, this is a weekend or a three-day this is a three-day event.

Unlike anything you’ve ever been a part of. Like I said, I speak for U s A basketball nationally on player development with Unleashed Potential. We have used a lot of this stuff and we’ve held these performance skill and performance combines multiple times in multiple areas. We do stuff internationally with this.

So basically what’s happening here is I used to run the biggest player development organization in the United States. Literally worked in every NBA W N B A city in the country, and also working with Duke and Coach K. Also working with U S A basketball, all the different experiences I had.

And also with my performance background. We’ve sort of combined all these things into one. So, like I said, this isn’t, this isn’t your normal, this isn’t your typical basketball camp. Okay. And then, then we’re going to talk about the different parts here in a second. But I just want to let you know, the facilities, like, like Mike said, are, are, are, are great.

And then, you know coach Hutchins there, the head coach at Western Reserve. And Matt Garvey do a tremendous job there. So they’re top-notch facilities. You’re going to get a basketball experience like, like you’ve probably never, never experienced before. The reason I say that because it’s not only basketball skills, it’s performance, and we really specialize in a lot of speed of Jody quickness with and without the ball basketball related skills combined with our basketball skills.

And that’s what’s unique about this. Okay. You’re getting the whole package. A lot of. Can’t afford to have their own performance trainers and things like that. So we give you stuff, high level stuff that, that I’ve gotten from Duke University and Will Stevens working with him for many, many years and what they do down at Duke.

We’re going to incorporate a lot of that into this being, being a court coach at USA basketball, working with Unleashed Potential, my son and my daughter-in-law around the country and internationally. So I just want to give you a little bit of background on that, what you’re looking forward to basketball wise.

So, and also, We’re going to break it down to 10 segments throughout the three days. Ball handling and finishing would be first, and what you have to understand is we don’t just work on a skill, we make it competitive. I got a model called competitive edgers. I spoke before and who said we’re going to make you compete.

No matter what you’re doing, you’re competing, whether you’re getting contact and finishing, whether you’re ball handling against an opponent, all these different things with that the second one will be shooting skill work, including form shooting instruction. So we’ll do some form shooting instruction, break that down.

But again, also different shots off the move game, transferable shooting you know, competitions with shooting. Be able to shoot under pressure. That’s a big part of that one too. And then, like I spoke earlier about athletic performance work, which is huge today. If you want to be a college level player, we’re going to give you a little intro.

You’re at sixth, seventh. Rising ninth grader. You, you’re going to, you’re going to get some performance work that colleges will do or will put you through when you get to that level. Okay? Really stuff that you won’t get a lot of other places. Then we’re going to actually we’re going to have some live five on five.

We also do a lot with what we call small-sided games. Okay? These are situations, some, some one-on-one, some two on two, some three on three that develop as you go through those. And it’s another way to incorporate skills into, before you get into five on five, incorporate skills and competitions into those segments.

So that, that’s a really dynamic part that I think a lot of, a lot of camps don’t touch on. But you’re going to get a lot with that number. Individual team defense. We’re going to work on individual team defense stance, movement, full court movements, closeouts, defending Dribblers, full court, half court. And again, I also do a lot of work with the Boston Celtics and our youth organizations.

And I’ve been a part of their organization for the last couple years, and actually going to be going back in April before I come, before we start the camp in Cleveland, doing that again. So got some great stuff that they do with the Celtics that we’re going to incorporate defensively in this, in this clinic also, this.

And then a big part of this is three on three. And you know, I always say that you learn how to play basketball. We’re playing three on three, two on two and one-on-one. So we’ll definitely be playing three on three, doing a lot of different stuff, three on three, and actually starting with specific actions and different areas, loading up different areas of the court.

So it’s not your typical three on three. Again, it’s something a little bit different in in, in with that one. And then four and four cutthroat, that’s a big one for us. At U S A basketball, we do a lot of four and four cutthroat. You know, all national levels you know, the U 16 seventeens, the eighteens, nineteens.

And then also on the the, the national level with the national teams, the men’s and women’s teams. So that’s a big part of going to be a big part of this camp. Also shooting on the move. We’re big on footwork. You know, a lot of coaches, that’s a law, start working on footwork. Anybody that knows unleash potential, I’ve had many coaches call me and say, man we watch your stuff and we watch the footwork to see if it’s consistent, what you guys are teaching. And I’ve got many coaches that are from around the country have told us they love what we do with proper footwork. If you have proper footwork, you’re going to rise above everybody else because most coaches you know, today don’t spend enough time on footwork.

That’s big for us. Passing instruction shots off the dribble, catch you, shoot on a move. Every type of action was shooting. Again, I literally have the practice. That the Celtics use with their guards. People think it’s complicated stuff. It’s not okay. Basically it, it, it, it, it’s just the basic footwork and having basic footwork and basic shot technique.

You know, proper shot technique going into every shot. So there’s a lot of stuff we incorporate with that. And then we will play some five on five team games. Okay. That’s always a part of it. It’s not, it’s not going to be the majority, the biggest part of it, but we will allow some of that.

We’ll run some basic offensive principles, install maybe not a balance player or two so you get a little bit of be able to incorporate what we’re doing into five 15 some, some of that team games. Our, our biggest thing is efficient player development. This is total player development. Okay.

Total player development is not only the skills, it’s the athletic part, it’s the speed, agility, quickness, it’s the it, it’s the communication, it’s the body language. It’s all those things that go into a player, being a player. Okay. And, and I can say this. Through our experience at you know, with Unleashed Potential, my experience with s a basketball, I know what U s a basketball, since I’m a court coach, I also evaluate for USA basketball evaluate players.

So this is going to be key for you guys, for the, get the players that are here. Cause they’re going to see what it takes to for someone who looks at, at, at players to possibly get invited to our, our junior national team and stuff like that. I assist with that. So this is going to be a good chance for you to see exactly.

What someone who does some evaluating looks for in a player. That’s why I said this. This is going to be a combination of a lot of things. All my experiences, I’ve been very fortunate, all my experiences across the country and across the world to share with, with the players there. And then the, the, a really big part of this too is a lot of camps and clinics, whatever you want to call ’em, They do all on court stuff.

We are going to do some off court stuff. So while some half the camp is working on a skill or a segment, we might have the other half of the camp doing some off the court instruction, like in a classroom about goal setting, about, you know You know what it takes to go from good to great as a player for player development.

You know what it takes to be a leader on and off the court communicating with your teammates. So we get some valuable, valuable stuff that college coaches look at in players. So this is going to be something where it’s going to encompass so many areas of basketball. That’s why I call this, this is total player development.

This just isn’t working with skills in a ball. There’s so many other. That are incorporating this. That’s why I say this is a, this is a weekend that you’ll never forget, or three days that you’ll never forget. Because like I said, I do this all over the country and all over the world with huge success.

And it’s just something that you don’t typically get. And we’ve gotten a lot of great feedback. And just to throw this in recently, high school season has started. We just have found out that in the last week we unleashed. We have 29 kids in our opening tournaments, high school basketball, the minimum of 29 kids that have made all tournament teams or v p.

So we we’re very proud of our results. We pride ourself in production and results, and that’s what we want to get once you get the players to get out of this. So I think this will be a great three days.

[00:15:28] Mike Klinzing: Looking to grow your coaching. United Basketball Plus has over 3000 plays and 45 deep dive courses with some of the best minds in the game, including Tyler Coston, Paul Kelleher, Tobin Anderson, Dave Love. And more. You can also view their United Basketball Clinics and receive 50% off in-person clinics.

United Basketball Plus has partnered with Jordan and Joe’s decision for their skill development curriculum. United Basketball Plus is a one-stop shop to help you grow as a coach, leader and culture builder. Follow the link in the show notes and use the code clinic to receive an annual membership for just $50.

All right. For our audience, if you do not feel the passion that Joe has for the game of basketball, for player development, from listening to this, I’m not sure what you’re listening to and clearly the excitement that Joe has, the excitement that I have to bring this to Western Reserve Academy, we are super excited.

So for anyone who’s out there that is a player, a parent, a coach, you’re listening to it, please. Make sure you check this thing out. It is going to be an unbelievable weekend of basketball. We are going to put together the best possible staff. We’re going to have a five to one coach to player ratio, so you are going to get coached.

A lot of times you can show up at a camp and there might be one coach there for every 20 or 25 kids. and nobody’s going to get to know you. Nobody’s going to really take a look at what you’re doing. It’s all just kind of, we’re just hurting people through. That is not what this is all about. We are going to put forth a tremendous amount of effort to get to know you, to get to know your child, to get to know the players that are there so that we can properly evaluate, give you feedback.

Coach you up and make sure that you leave there a, a better player just for having been there for those three days. But also I think Joe mentioned that you’re going to get some things that you can take home with you that you can work on. So you’re going to get athletic performance stuff, you’re going to get things that.

You can work on when you’re working out on your own and trying to improve your game, and that’s all going to be a part of what we’re putting together for this performance combine. We are, again, unbelievably excited. It’s going to be held at Western Reserve Academy, Hudson, Ohio, which is the suburb of Cleveland, June 29th through July 1st, 2023 for boys rising to grade six through nine in the fall of 2020.

Now I know we’ve got a ton of coaches out there that are part of our audience. So if you’re listening to the episode, please reach out to Joe, reach out to me. You can register for the camp@headstartbasketball.com, right there on the homepage. At the very top. You can click on it. There’s a spot to click where you can get registered right away.

Once you do that, you’ll be all set for next summer. And again, we expect this thing to sell out. We just put it up there in the last week or two and we expect. Early spring that spots are going to gone. Are going to be gone. We’re going to take a hundred kids, we got five full courts. We’re going to have a five to one player to coach ratio like I mentioned earlier.

And again, we just think this is going to be the best possible basketball weekend for anyone who is going into grade six through nine. A young player that wants to improve, that wants to get better. We are going to be there to help you next June 29th through July 1st. To make sure that this thing is everything that you could ever hope for in a basketball camp.

So we are unbelievably excited. Joe, obviously you can feel how excited I am. And I think, Joe, you feel the same way.

[00:19:05] Joe Stasyszyn: Yes, Mike. And I just can’t stress enough that when we run these combines, we’ve done these before, not overnight, but in different areas and stuff like that.

We get tremendous feedback about getting these kids, showing these kids what the next level looks like. You know? And if you want to go on unleash seven seventeen.com, please do to look at my resume, to look what I’ve done, what we’ve done unleashed potential. My son Jordan and my daughter-in-law Lex, our tremendous teachers of the game.

He was the division one player in college. Great teacher of the game. Lex was a two time division three all American, so they’re just tremendous. And I know Mike’s a great coach, does a great job with his program out there in Cleveland. And like he said, the coaches we’re going to have and the experience you’re going to get.

And what I want to leave you with is this this really important and that you understand that College coaches are going, are starting to recruit younger and younger and younger. So the sooner that you get to where you understand what hard work looks like and what it looks like to, to get to that next level, you know what coaches are looking for, what USA basketball, what they look for in their players.

You put all those kind of things together. And you this, that’s why this combine is invaluable because you have very experienced people that have been here. You know, and I’m going to say it again. You know, and I can say this because I have worked in every major NBA city in the country.

So I’ve seen it all.  I’ve seen the best of the best. And I’ve worked with the best of the best. So I try to bring that to the table anywhere I go,  I want you to leave that combine better than what you came, than what you got there. Okay? That’s, that’s what we want to do. Mike and I and our staff, and I can’t thank Mike and Jason enough.

These guys at Hoops Heads, they do a tremendous job. That’s one of the reasons when he asked me, he’s one of these few people that I would do something like this with, because they just do a tremendous job in everything they do.

[00:21:03] Mike Klinzing: This thing’s going to be first

class in every possible facet. So we start with the venue, Western Reserve Academy. I can’t honestly think of a better place to host the training camp because of the facilities, because of the proximity between the dorm and dining hall and the gyms. Then you talk about Joe and what he’s going to bring. And his experience with Unleashed Potential and everything that he’s already talked about, that he’s done in the past in his career, the people that he’s been connected to, the people that he has an opportunity to work with, the people that he’s learned from, the people that he’s taught over the years, unbelievable experiences is why I wanted to bring Joe in to be a part of that.

And then you start talking about the staff that we’re going to put together that’s going to be there to work with the players that are in attendance. It’s just going to be a first class. From top to bottom. Start to finish, and again, I’ll leave you with one more time, just the pertinent information held at Western Reserve Academy, Hudson, Ohio, suburb of Cleveland, June 29th through July 1st, 2023.

It’s just going to be a phenomenal event. Again, it’s called the Training Camp Elite Skill Development and Performance Combine. We are unbelievably. Again, if you’re a coach in our audience and you’ve been listening, you have an idea of what my philosophy is as a coach, just from hopefully listening to multiple interviews, you got a little taste of what Joe’s all about.

You can go back and listen to his episodes. As he said, you can go and check out his website Unleashed Potential, and take a look at his bio and all the things that he’s done. You’re just not going to get a better basketball camp experience than what you’re going to get at the training camp. So we hope we see everyone.

Next summer, please visit headstartbasketball.com. Right there on the front page, you’ll see a spot where you can click on the link and it will take you right to the page where you can get registered. And then we’ll take care of everything from there. And you are going to be looking forward to a first class basketball event.

Joe, I’ll leave it to you for one more final word and then I’ll wrap things up.

[00:23:07] Joe Stasyszyn: Yes, just repeating what Mike said. This will be a, a first class event. Also one thing I did want to say in too is like WRA is a great facility.  It’s a prep school if you’re ever looking for a prep school, know they do a great job too with coaching.

There actually a kid I work with in Canada on a Canadian junior national team, he’s a high major kid that’s being recruited. He plays there and he has nothing but great things to say about that. So again, Go register. Like Mike said this thing, I think once it get gets out there, it’s going to go fast.

We would love to have you, and I guarantee one thing I guarantee you is you’re, you’re going to be better when you leave there and what you came in a lot of ways. Okay, so again, I can’t emphasize enough. If you want to get into this three day combine get on it as fast as you can.

[00:23:59] Mike Klinzing: Absolutely. Joe cannot thank you enough for jumping on and cannot thank you enough for being willing to partner. I, I can’t believe just you and I have talked about it from the moment that we got introduced by Alan Stein, that, hey, maybe there’ll be a time for us to be able to work together. And lo and behold, that time is almost here.

So we hope that people in our audience, coaches, players, parents, anybody who’s out there listening, please, Get signed up. You’re not going to regret it. It’s going to be a fantastic event. We are super excited about it. Again, the training Camp Elite, skill Development and performance combine Western Reserve Academy June 29th through July 1st, thanks to everyone for listening tonight.

We really appreciate it, and we will catch you on our next episode. Thanks.
