NCAAB Team Profiles: UNC Wilmington Seahawks

The National Collegiate Athletic Association Basketball (NCAAB) is a college basketball league that is played between teams from universities or colleges, typically in the United States.

Many teams from all over the country in the NCAAB compete to win the Division I championship title, producing some of the most intense moments on the court outside the professional ranks.

Scouts watch these games closely, looking at the teams and individual players to find the best talent there is. As a result, a lot of NCAAB players successfully progress to the National Basketball Association (NBA).

One of the teams competing in the NCAAB is the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, a team that has been around for a couple of decades. Although they haven’t yet reached the heights of fame, their performance in recent years is something that should be admired.

Here’s a little bit more information about the team.

Who Are They?

The UNC Wilmington Seahawks represent The University of North Carolina Wilmington in the sport of basketball. They currently compete as part of the NCAA’s Division I and the Colonial Athletic Association.

UNC Wilmington started to compete in intercollegiate basketball in 1951. However, it wasn’t until the 1976 – 77 season that they began playing Division I NCAA basketball.

From 1976 point up until 1984, they played under an independent Conference membership. Between 1984 and the present day, they have continued to play under a membership with the Colonial Athletic Association.

Currently, the team is playing under the guidance of current head coach Takayo Siddle, who has led the team since 2020. He is the thirteenth coach in the history of the team.

Mascot and Team Name

The Seahawks mascot is a pretty interesting one, to say the least.

According to James and Gene Warren, brothers who were members of the five-person inaugural Wilmington College student council, the nickname, and colors used for the school’s first athletic teams originated in 1947.

The nickname “Seahawks” for any athletic team under the UNC Wilmington umbrella was selected due to the overall level of popularity that the Iowa Pre-Flight Seahawks once had. This was a team coached by Bernie Berman, former head coach of the University of Minnesota.

Iowa was well-known for its incredible athletic teams at the time, and the name fit well with Wilmington College due to its proximity to the water.

Now, the iconic costumed mascot for the UNC Wilmington men’s basketball team is “Sammy C. Hawk,” a mythical creature that lives as a fish but shapeshifts into a bird during the sports season to feast on its opponents.

Standout Players

There have been many impressive players that have passed through the ranks of the UNC Wilmington Seahawks basketball team. But, as of 2022, three former Seahawks have gone on to play and gain notoriety in the NBA.

Brian Rowsom was selected by the Indiana Pacers during the second round of the 1987 NBA Draft. He would go on to play for the Charlotte Hornets, with an NBA career that spanned three seasons.

Matt Fish was drafted in 1992 to the Golden State Warriors. He played three seasons in the league and went on to play for incredible franchises such as the Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, and Washington Bullets.

Devontae Cacok has had dealings with the Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs, and Portland Trail Blazers but has yet to be drafted into the NBA. However, he currently competes in the Motor City Cruise of the NBA G League.

Notable Achievements

The Seahawks have since appeared in the Division I NCAA tournament a total of 6 times. As a result of this, they have a combined record of 1-6.

They have won at least one share of the regular season CAA championship for a consecutive total of three years.

Notably, the Seahawks won the CAA tournament and appeared in back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 2016 and 2017.

Under the leadership of renowned head coach Takayo Siddle, the Seahawks also clinched victory in the 2022 College Basketball Invitational (CBI). They beat out 15 other teams for the position.

This tournament features a total of 16 teams that are not selected to participate in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) or the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I tournament.
