Will the Magic and Heat be able to Bring Florida Back to the Top in the NBA?

People living in Florida and loving sports are having a good time. A few years ago, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers led by the football GOAT, Tom Brady, won the Lombardi Trophy, while in the last two years the Florida Panthers – a team playing ice hockey, which isn’t exactly the most popular sport around these parts, where people don’t know what winter is – dominated the NHL, winning a couple of Stanley Cups in a row. If football and ice hockey are in good shape (and the same could be said for soccer, since Leo Messi plays in Miami, or tennis, given the nice career Coco Gauff is building for herself), basketball fans are not satisfied at all.

What to expect from Florida teams in the NBA

The teams based in Florida are pretty young. The Heat were founded in 1988 and the Magic the following year. However, both can count on a vast number of supporters. Miami already won three titles, thanks to the efforts of team legends Dwyane Wade, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Bosh and, obviously, LeBron James. The Magic are still trophyless but are building a good team by signing (and re-signing) interesting players.

But what do the experts think are the real playoff odds for these two beloved teams? According to bookmakers, such as those legal and licensed to operate in the state of Florida, found at https://www.sportsgrid.com/betting/florida, the Magic are almost certain of qualification, thanks in part to the arrival of Desmond Bane. The Heat, though, are a bit further back in the odds. The former have also seen their chances of making the Finals increase significantly, due to Haliburton’s injury, which has deprived the Indiana Pacers, its direct Eastern Conference contender, of their biggest superstar, who is also one of the greatest talents in the league. The playmaker will miss the whole 2025-2026 season.

New faces for new ambitions

While we write this, the Magic are labeled as a bona fide team to watch this offseason. They seem way more ambitious than their Miami-based rivals and are probably bound to call other players after Bane.

The team was eliminated by the Boston Celtics during the first round of last year’s playoffs and that result left the front office disappointed and the players enraged. The team, however, seems to have bounced back quite nicely and is leading a solid offseason. They brought Bane in and renewed one of their best players, Paolo Banchero, for the next 5 years. Now, the fan base is hoping for other splashes. In Orlando the mindset is clear: the front office is in a win-now mentality and wants to fill each and every hole to build a winner.

Bane, Banchero and Fritz Wagner will be the centerpieces of the project, which recently updated jerseys and logo, to bring fresh air in Orlando and create a winning atmosphere. In order to do so, they’ll need some bodies. Nickeil Alexander-Walker, the Minnesota Timberwolves guard, could be the next addition and we have more than one report from around the league that is sure the Magic are looking to regulate their salary cap in order to acquire, at least, a couple of offensive-minded players.

The Heat are playing the waiting game. They didn’t make any sizable move and don’t seem about to make one, especially in these weeks where the pace of the offseason is quite slow. Miami dealt Jimmy Butler to Golden State some months ago, mid-season, because of some contract issues, and now doesn’t have any true superstar. Bam Adebayo is a pretty good player, maybe ready to play in a true contender. The Heat are not such a team right now and could consider trading him to acquire some pieces (players or draft picks) to build a winner next year.

It is always hard to know what’s going on in the mind of Pat Riley, a legend in the league and the creator of a truly winning culture in Dade County. We will try to find an answer in one of our basketball podcasts, the go-to destination for every true NBA and college hoops enthusiast.
